Lulls?? Gusts??... I've forgotten what they are.

Just had a few hours sailing in ridiculously constant WSW winds and what must be my new 'BEST EVER' session.

When I got to the beach, the sun was shining and the wind blowing WSW at 18 knots, and the shoreline was once again lined with fishermen as there has been some sort of fishing competition going on here this week. I thought getting out past all the fishermen in the fairly onshore conditions without getting caught up in one of their lines would be difficult, but the conditions were so perfect I had to give it a go.

I rigged my Cross 100 and 5.7m sail and got out there. I picked a biggish gap (about 20m) between two fishermen and jumped on whilst getting dirty looks. I managed to get straight on the plane and head upwind without any incidents, so continued blasting out across the green waters to the Aberdovey Bar bouy, gaining ground upwind all the time. I gybed around the bouy and headed back towards the fishermen, but now had plenty of space to gybe about 400m from the shore and sail around to my hearts content out at sea away from the nasty hooks and lines.

The kit was perfect, the wind was perfect, the weather was perfect and I was perfectly powered up the whole time, blasting flat out across the lumpy waters. After a while I'd gained quite a bit of ground upwind and was quite a way out to sea, so decided to sail towards Borth. With the bit of southerly in the wind it took me about 6 big long, flat out and slightly upwind tacks to get there, but when I did, I gybed right in front of the lifeboat station and then was faced with a completely mad, ridiculously fast 5 mile long speed run just off the wind back towards Ynyslas. I sped past the fishermen and warp speed, past the Dovey Bar Bouy, across the mouth of the estuary and towards Graveyards where I powered into a gybe with such a big grin on my face that I just had to do it again....

So, several more huge slightly upwind but still flat out reaches and I was back at the Lifeboat station. This time I played around in the waves a bit as they were really clean at this end of the beach, before shooting off another 5 mile speed run. I did this four times in total and must have covered about 60 miles altogether... Its 5 miles each way, but going from Ynyslas to Borth I had to tack to get upwind so reckon it was probably about 10 miles in that direction... 4 times that is 60 miles!!!, plus a bit of messing around here and there probably brings it close to 70 miles really... Thats a long way in one session!!! :) I was out for 2.5-3 hours altogether, so that probably works out at an avrage speed of around 25 mph, which sounds about right... I was certainly going fast!.

What more can I say, the best session ever!!!... Oh, I nearly forgot, I made a few nice jumps, had the odd good wave ride and screamed around all of my gybes! :)
